Suar wood Buddha figure

A seated Buddha hand-carved in suar wood, from a single piece, with no joins. Calm face, hands in the meditation gesture. Natural waxed finish, with the grain showing through the robe. It is carved by I Wayan Latra of the Karya Mas workshop in Mas, a village that has been the centre of Balinese woodcarving for decades. Carvers there start with the face: if it comes out right, the rest of the figure follows by itself.

Height 15–40 cm; state your chosen size in the order notes. If you leave it blank, we will ask by e-mail before shipping. Suar has interlocked fibres and a dark, warm colour, which makes the figure stable and resistant to cracking.

For a meditation corner, a bookshelf, or a chest of drawers in the hallway, next to incense and a single plant. Smaller figures sit well on a desk, larger ones on the floor by a window. One figure is enough; it needs no company.

Material and care: keep waxed wood away from direct sun and radiators, in a dry place. Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Refresh the surface with a little wood wax from time to time.

Handmade: every figure is carved individually, from a different piece of wood. The features, the position of the hands, the grain, the shade and the exact dimensions differ from the photo. That is the nature of handwork, not a defect.
