The weight of stone
A basin of solid onyx weighs so much that it takes two people. The craftsman smooths the inside for days, until water runs over it without a sound. Silence and weight — in a single object.
The block of onyx that becomes one basin weighs more than a person. It arrives from the quarry on a pickup, and two men carry it into the workshop slowly, with the respect due to something that took millions of years to form.
Carving stone is the opposite of carving wood. Wood forgives — stone does not. One stroke too strong and weeks of work are lost. So the craftsman works slowly, layer by layer, checking the thickness of the wall against the light: onyx is translucent and betrays every mistake.
The inside is smoothed for days, until water runs over it silently — no splashing, no resistance. That is the test of readiness: a good basin makes no noise. Here, silence is the measure of quality.
When the morning sun falls on the finished stone, the onyx glows from within like amber. The mineral veins form a map nature will never repeat. You keep a piece of a mountain at home — and a piece of time that cannot be hurried.
