Cork, Rubber and Jute Yoga Mats: Which Natural Material to Choose?

A natural yoga mat is a mat whose top layer and base come from plants: the bark of the cork oak, the latex of the rubber tree, jute fibres or woven cotton. Unlike PVC and TPE mats it contains no plasticisers or chlorine, it biodegrades at the end of its life, and it owes its grip to the structure of the material rather than a chemical coating.
In this article we compare the four natural raw materials of mats: cork, natural rubber, jute and organic cotton, set them against PVC and TPE, explain which thickness and weight make sense, how to clean a mat and how to check whether “natural” on the label means natural inside. Cork: the bark that grips when wet
Cork is the bark of the cork oak (Quercus suber), a tree of the western Mediterranean. The bark is stripped from the living tree roughly every nine years and grows back, which is why cork counts as one of the most renewable raw materials in the world. Portugal is the largest producer, Spain the second; no cork is harvested in Bali, it arrives there in sheets and is laminated onto a rubber base. Cork cells are filled with air and coated in suberin, a waxy substance that keeps the material from absorbing water and naturally limits the growth of bacteria and mould.
Dry cork is smooth and some people find it slippery, but grip increases with sweat: the warmer and damper it gets, the more securely the hand holds. That is why cork is loved by vinyasa practitioners and anyone practising in a heated room. Drawbacks: the surface crumbles at the edges over time, it dislikes being rolled tightly or scratched by sharp nails, and the rubber base adds weight.
Natural rubber: latex from Indonesia and the allergy question
Natural rubber is made from latex, the milky sap of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). The tree is native to the Amazon, but for over a century it has been grown mainly in Southeast Asia: Thailand and Indonesia are the two largest producers in the world, and Indonesia's plantations lie chiefly in Sumatra and Kalimantan, not in Bali. Latex runs from cuts in the bark into small cups, is then coagulated and vulcanised, and the finished rubber is extruded into open-cell sheets that give mats their springiness and grip.
A natural rubber mat is heavy and dense and holds both floor and hand even when dry; it loses a little when wet but still beats PVC. It has two well-known weaknesses. The first is smell: a new mat smells of rubber for a few weeks, which is a sign of the natural raw material rather than a flaw. The second is latex allergy: the proteins in natural rubber can trigger reactions in sensitised people, so allergy sufferers should choose cork on a TPE base or a cotton mat. Rubber also dislikes sun and heat, which make it brittle.
Jute and cotton: fibres from the loom
Jute is a bast fibre from the Corchorus plant, grown in the Ganges delta, mainly in Bangladesh and India. In yoga mats it appears as a coarse, mesh-like top layer pressed together with rubber or a polymer; it gives excellent dry grip and a distinct texture underfoot, but cushions poorly and absorbs sweat, so it needs drying more often. It is a good choice for calm practices, hatha yoga and meditation, less so for dynamic flows.
Organic cotton is a different philosophy: the woven mat, called a Mysore rug after the city in southern India, was traditionally laid over an ordinary mat in the ashtanga tradition to absorb sweat and protect the skin. It can be machine washed, is light and rolls up like a blanket. On a smooth floor it slides when dry, so it is used on top of another mat or the edges are lightly dampened. PVC and TPE: what to avoid and why
Most cheap mats are PVC, polyvinyl chloride softened with plasticisers that migrate out of the material over time. PVC is durable and cheap, but it contains chlorine, does not biodegrade, releases toxic compounds in production and incineration, and the chemical smell of a new mat is precisely those additives escaping. TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is marketed as the eco alternative: no chlorine, no phthalates, lighter and in theory recyclable. In practice it is still a petroleum-based plastic that wears faster than rubber and sheds microplastic. If a natural material matters to you, both groups are out; if you have a latex allergy, TPE as the base under cork is a reasonable compromise.

Which thickness and weight make sense?
The standard is 3–5 mm. A thinner mat (3 mm) gives better contact with the floor and stability in standing poses and balances; a thicker one (5 mm) protects knees and spine in floor poses and restorative practice. Mats of 6–8 mm are really pilates and exercise mats on which yoga becomes wobbly. Weight follows from material: a natural 4 mm mat 183 cm long usually weighs 1.5–2.5 kg, so it does better at home and in the studio than in a backpack. For travel it is worth having a separate thin 1.5–2 mm mat of pure rubber that rolls up like a towel.
How to clean a natural mat
- After every practice — wipe the mat with a damp cloth and leave it flat to dry; a rolled-up damp mat is the shortest route to mould,
- Once a week — spray with a solution of water and vinegar (roughly 4:1) or water with a drop of mild soap, wipe and dry,
- No sun — UV makes rubber brittle and bleaches cork; dry in the shade with air flowing,
- No essential oils on the mat — the oils in “mat sprays” dissolve rubber; if you like a scent, light incense nearby instead of spraying the surface,
- No washing machine, no soaking — rubber and cork cannot take immersion; the cotton mat is the exception.
How to check whether a mat is really natural
The word “eco” on a box means nothing. Look at a few things: the declared composition (natural rubber, cork, jute, cotton, not “environmentally friendly material”), the smell (new rubber smells of rubber, PVC smells chemical, TPE hardly at all), the weight (rubber is noticeably heavier than plastics), the texture of the cork (natural cork has an irregular, multi-toned grain, not a perfectly even print) and the price, because natural raw materials cost money. An honest maker states what the base is and what glue bonds the cork to it; cheaper mats use solvent-based glue, better ones water-based.
Why a yoga mat in the journal of a brand from Bali?
Since the early 2000s Bali has been one of the most important places in the world to practise yoga. - Cork: its grip increases with moisture, so the more you sweat, the more securely it holds. Natural rubber is excellent dry but loses grip when wet. An alternative is a towel or a woven cotton mat laid on top to absorb sweat.

- Not always. Natural rubber contains latex proteins that can trigger a skin or respiratory reaction in sensitised people. Allergy sufferers should choose a cork mat on a TPE base, a cotton mat or a product declared latex-free.

- The rubber smell is a natural property of latex and a sign that the mat is real rubber rather than plastic. It usually fades after a few weeks; leaving the mat unrolled in an airy, shaded place helps. A sharp chemical smell, by contrast, is typical of PVC.

- For most people 4 mm: thin enough to stand steadily and thick enough to spare the knees. A 3 mm mat suits standing practice and travel, 5 mm suits floor work and sensitive joints. Above 6 mm balances become wobbly.

- With a damp cloth after every practice, and once a week with a solution of water and vinegar or a drop of mild soap. Do not soak it, put it in a washing machine or dry it in the sun, as cork discolours and rubber turns brittle. Dry it flat, in the shade.
