Textiles from Bali — endek and songket

Balinese cloth falls into three kinds: endek, woven on a loom from yarn dyed before weaving; songket, shot with gold or silver thread and worn for ceremonies; and batik, where the pattern is drawn in wax before the dye goes on.

We source runners and cloth from Sidemen and Gelgel, where weaving is still done by hand and a single piece takes days to weeks. The pattern at the edges can differ slightly between pieces, because a loom never repeats thread for thread. Hand-wash in cool water and dry in the shade.
